Canada Announces Graduate Research Scholarship 2026 for Pakistani PhD Students

The Government of Canada has introduced the Graduate Research Scholarship 2026, an initiative aimed at supporting talented international scholars, including Pakistani students, who are pursuing doctoral studies in Canada. This prestigious program underscores Canada’s commitment to strengthening global research collaboration and academic excellence.

Financial Support

Under the program, successful candidates will receive CAD 40,000 per year for a period of up to three years. This financial assistance is designed to cover tuition fees, research costs, and living expenses, ensuring that scholars can devote their full attention to their academic and research work without financial stress.

Eligibility Criteria

The scholarship is open to both Canadian and international students, including those from Pakistan. To be eligible, applicants must:

  • Be enrolled in a recognized PhD program at a Canadian university.
  • Have completed no more than 36 months of their doctoral studies as of December 31, 2025.
  • Be part of a program that includes a significant research component, such as a thesis or dissertation.
  • Students pursuing joint degrees (e.g., MD/PhD, MA/PhD) may also apply, provided that their academic track includes a major research requirement.

Application Process

Applicants must submit their applications through their respective Canadian institutions, which will then forward nominations to the national selection committee. The final deadline for submissions is October 17, 2025. Interested candidates are advised to begin preparing their research proposals, academic records, and recommendation letters well in advance.

Broader Purpose of the Scholarship

The initiative aims to attract some of the brightest minds from across the globe, creating an environment where innovation and creativity can thrive. By opening doors to international scholars, Canada seeks to not only enhance the quality of its research output but also build long-term academic and cultural ties with countries like Pakistan.

This program is particularly significant as it comes at a time when various countries are expanding higher education opportunities for Pakistani students. Recently, Bangladesh also announced 500 scholarships for Pakistanis, highlighting a growing trend of academic collaboration and regional cooperation in education.

Why This Matters for Pakistani Students

For Pakistani students, this scholarship represents more than just financial assistance—it is a gateway to world-class research facilities, mentorship from leading academics, and the chance to work on projects with global impact. Graduates of Canadian universities often play influential roles in academia, industry, and public policy, making this an opportunity that can shape future leaders.
