NDMA issues high-flood alert for Ravi as India releases water

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a high-flood alert for the Ravi River after India released a significant volume of water into the waterway. Authorities have cautioned that the rising water levels could pose serious threats to low-lying areas along the riverbanks in Punjab. Villages and agricultural lands located close to the river are particularly at risk, and residents have been advised to remain vigilant and prepared for possible evacuation in case the situation worsens.

According to official reports, the sudden release of water has accelerated the river’s flow, raising concerns about potential breaches in embankments.

NDMA has already directed local administrations to stay on high alert and mobilize rescue teams to ensure swift action if flooding occurs. Emergency response units have also been placed on standby, with rescue boats and equipment dispatched to sensitive points along the Ravi.

Floods in the Ravi River have historically caused extensive damage to both life and property, and this year’s alert comes at a time when farmers are already facing challenges due to unpredictable weather patterns. Many fields located near the riverbanks are at risk of being submerged, which could have a direct impact on crop yields and livelihoods of local communities. Authorities are urging residents not to ignore safety warnings and to follow the instructions of local officials to minimize the risk of casualties.

NDMA has also emphasized the importance of coordination between federal and provincial disaster management bodies to ensure an effective response. Relief camps are being prepared in anticipation of displacement, and health departments have been directed to remain ready to deal with emergencies.

The authority has also appealed to the public to avoid unnecessary movement near the river and to immediately report any signs of danger in their areas.

While the situation is being closely monitored, officials believe that preventive measures and timely evacuation can significantly reduce the impact of the floodwaters. However, they also stress the need for long-term solutions, including improved flood management infrastructure, to safeguard communities living near rivers. For now, vigilance and preparedness remain the top priorities as water levels in the Ravi continue to rise.
